Memory/Widows/Orphans

Dear Mr. Slivitzky,
XyWrite and Signature can only take advantage of expanded memory - they do not
access extended. In XyWrite 4.0 the /e switch allows you to increase or
decrease the amount of expanded memory XyWrite will use, freeing up
conventional memory. XyWrite will automatically use all your expanded memory
(up to 4MB) if you omit the switch, for dictionary files, help files, menu
files, and overflow files. If you do not want XyWrite to use any expanded
memory, at the DOS prompt type EDITOR/e0. If you want XyWrite XyWrite to use
2MB, at the DOS prompt type EDITOR/e2000. There is no particular value that
will allow you to check how much expanded memory XyWrite is using.
Signature also takes advantage of expanded memory, but there is no switch to
set how much you want it to use. Signature uses expanded memory for dictionary
files, menu files, and help files. The difference is Signature won't use it
for overflow files which will free up the remaining expanded memory.
It sounds as if your fax program is trying to use some expanded memory and
because XyWrite is hogging it all, you're receiving the insufficient memory
messages.
Widow and Orphan control are affected by the settings of the Bottom Margin
command. Widows will not work unless the value of BTmin is less than or equal
to BTnom. Orphans will not work unless the value of BTmax is greater than or
equal to BTnom. BTmin and BTmax is necessary and can be important for the
placement of footnotes. Refer to chapter 4 page 125 for more discussion on
bottom margins.
