Re: trouble

Bud, I just bought an HP Laser Jet 1300 last month and am delighted with
it. You may want a dot-matrix for the low cost of "replaceables," but
keep in mind that you can get this laser printer for about $380-$420. It
has a much smaller footprint than my previous laser printer, is very fast,
and is *utterly silent* when idling. Excellent print quality. In other
words, I recommend it. Both XyWrite III and IV are completely compatible
with it, even under DOS.

HP does not acknowledge that you can print from DOS, but you can.
There's a good collection of printer drivers on xywrite.com; download the
one you want, and you're off. The fundamentals of PCL (HP's printer
language) must have remained in place all these years, because I can even
print from my old driver (for HP LJ series II) to the new printer.
That's using a twelve year old driver on new hardware. I almost couldn't
believe it. With the most recent XyWrite driver (HP4-PLUS), much
prefereable of course, get a ton of fonts. I didn't notice a monospaced
Roman, however, just Gothic and Courier. But I think you could create
that font easily by using "Times Roman" or "Dutch" and altering (or
deleting?) the width tables.

I hope this helps.

Carlo
