This makes me glad that I continue using older computers, of which I have a few. (Shuttle XPC cube computers for desktops, and Lenovos for netbook or laptop). They are dual core to quad core, prior to the current ruling gen of i3 / i 5 / i7, but powerful enough, and more than adequate for my needs. Some of them are capable of running a VM, with at least decent performance. The "P" series Shuttle models have some handy, since discontinued features, like quick and very easy access to the hard drives, for swapping / cloning, and e-SATA. "Progress" is not always true progress. Better designs and better products may go away, but no one forces you to stop using them.
Likewise, I had salted away a spare Omnikey and an Avant Stellar, both of which have hardly been broken in, so I hope not to have to buy any more keyboards for the foreseeable future. (So, the Avants have receded into history as well ? That's unfortunate.)
I've also had more than a fair success at picking up some used-but-in-very-good-condition gear of
various kinds on eBay.

Many thanks for this Harry - - it sounds like it could solve a lot of
problems I now face. I really am amazed that it is considered
possible to omit important keys (NumLock, all possible numeric keypad
codes, PgUp,Dn,Home, End) on 15-inch (!!!) laptops where there is
plenty of room for them. Poor left/right click response at the
peripheries of the buttom area of the unified touchpad are also
concerns. These new laptops are utter marvels, but they are losing
basic navigation capabilities!! Unfortunately, the computer press, of
which I am now only a very lowly member indeed, is doing nothing to
arrest the rot, as should be its function.
