Duh. I guess you really are not beep-control-enabled then. Must be a
sound card thing. My two Compaq laptops and two HP laptops (well, now
almost the same thing) all have it, but I think they have similar sound
cards (ESS Allegro). A self-built desktop with a Creative SB Live sound
card also has it. Interestingly, here the default setting for the PC
Speaker is "Muted" and the control does not appear unless one selects it
in Properties. This is why I suggested to Patricia to try that route. I
thought the machine on which she was having trouble getting the Xy beep
simply had all DOS-generated sounds muted, but that seems not to have
been the case. And in your case, Robert, I guessed wrongly too. I'm slipping...
