What's in a tab?

Umm... maybe more of a  Word question than XY, but here
goes:
A client who uses  "Word" tells me that he can read my
file (which was written in XY and saved as Winword 2 (that's when
TTG stopped counting...), but there is a problem with the "Tab"
characters. Winword seems to dislike them. Could somebody who
knows Winword (ver 6 I think) confirm what code that software
would like to see in place of my trusty old tab code? TIA
