Re: Win 10 and Virtual XP

Kari,

Thanks for the feedback. I am glad to know that there are others
actively using XyWrite. I purchased Signature but that fell by the
wayside because XyWin works better for me. I use the FinePrint PDF
driver to directly create PDF's, and those can be saved with long
filenames. As I mentioned, I created a partition as F: drive (FAT32)
for XyWrite data files, so the directorys there work perfectly - 8.3
filenames and all. XyWin does a pretty good job of showing even the long
filenames, although that translation would be handled by the XP system?

I use the Microsoft freebie XP on the Win7's and Virtual Box with a
regular XP license on the Win10's. Both host systems can see all the
files on F: for backup, network, etc., so all is good. I have tried
VMware but didn't get that to work. I do use Second Copy and Dropbox
for backup and to work at home.

Hope my solutions/workarounds may be helpful to someone reading the
list. Thanks for all your help

Hello David, XyWin does not know about long filenames, so you must use DOS 8.3 filename schemes for everything. So if your long filenames show as coded gibberish, that is expected and can be fixed by sticking to DOS file and folder names. If this is not the problem, you can try alternative virtualization platforms. I use VirtualBox W2K on Win 7 for running many Win 3.1 programs, e.g. Win 3.1 Quark and Ventura can be made to work (with some adjustments). VB W2K is very stable and much faster that XP mode. It is my preferred solution for running older programs under Windows. Another option is to run XP mode under VMware Player instead of VirtualPC. The XP licensing option included with Win 7 Pro can be made to work under VMware Player (whereas VirtualBox needs a separate Windows XP license). I am presently running XyWrite 4.13 (the windows version) under XP in Virtual Box and Microsoft's virtual XP. Everything works except directorys of the Win7/10 files (both 64 bit systems). Have F: formatted as FAT and that works fine, so I am happy as a clam. No major problems. Just set the environment variable "path" to include the "XW" subdirectory. Even the dictionary works.
