Often there are three -- and occasionally more -- versions. For example,
the character for one-half:
« - 1-byte version - Ascii 171|Hex AB
ÿAB - standard 3-byte version - Ascii 255+61+62, i.e. 255+"AB"
þ9 - high-order 3-byte char# 825 - Ascii 254+57+2
