One problem with column tables (and snakes for that matter) is trying to view
them with the monospaced screen font in sizes larger than about 10 pt. Stuff
tends to disappear on the right or left, seemingly at random. You may have
 better luck editing in Graphic View, even tho the type is hard to read at
smaller sizes (you can always zoom in for a better look).

One thing you don't mention is whether, despite the disappearing type, the
table prints out accurately. If it does, then Graphic View is an easy
solution.

Another hint: Stick in a hard page break every now and then (at an
appropriate spot!) if your table is very large. That seems to keep the
internal page composition machinery from losing its place.
