XY4 DOS Spell Check [nnn]

Under XY4 DOS 4.017 (perhaps the last DOS version?):
1. Enter word enclosed in "true" quotes:
[264]test[265]
2. Spell check the on-screen file interactively; it's
OK.
3. Store it, and spell check the disk file. This
produces two errors in SPELL.TMP:
test*
*
where * is ASCII 254, the small black box.
This means that every word enclosed in quotes is
flagged as a potential error. Does anyone know of a
way to eliminate this? And (if TTG is listening)
shouldn't the SPELL command produce consistent results.
I've already got DF CK=1, which causes the spell
checker to ignore all words that contain a number, but
bracketed codes [nnn] aren't numbers and in any event I
don't want to ignore them. I dont' see any other
defaults that relate to the spell checker which might
provide a way to fix this . . .
