I've come into this late, so you may already have tried this...
When I had similar problems with invisible codes I could usually solve the
problem like this:
1) Save the file in some other format such as WordPerfect or RTF. Open the
file in WordPerfect or Word, save it in the same format in that other
program, and then import it back into XyWrite. Unfortunately, this can end
up with a lot of excess codes.
2) Start a new file. Copy the last few paragraphs of the problematic text
into it and check to see whether the problem recurs. If not, add more text
to the new file until the problem appears. Sometimes I can get down to a
single sentence that seems to cause the problem.
3) Use a home-brew program that reads in a text file one character at a time
and compares each character to an allowable list, discarding anything that
is not in the list. I don't have something like this at hand any longer,
both I wrote something similar to this with Turbo Pascal back in about 1986
to translate between XyWrite and WordStar.
