try to start them.
Oh! And leave on your lights, oven, blender, vacuum cleaner,
microwave (set the timer really really high), dryer, washing
machine, furnace, all power tools, tv, radio, heating pad, toilet
(just take out the stopper), etc. That way they'll all be primed
and ready to go when you need them.
First, there's this, among, literally, hundreds of such threads on
public and paid domains.

if, as RH suggests, you power down (off) your HD and monitor, then,
I'm guessing, the only thing that's "running," as it were, is the
fan. Third, the commodity factor ("they're damn cheap and I'm going
to buy a new one anyway") is mitigated by millions of folks who are
sticking to XP and upgrading components rather than acquiring new
machines and are looking for ways to keep their current boxes healthy
and running several more years.
