Re: running Xy on a Mac

>My impression
(this may be wrong though) is that older versions of Windows, in which
Xy ran well, will someday cease to install on new hardware (due in part
to hardisk sizes and bootsector parameters which are over the horizon
for w2k and earlier versions). So we Xywriters are gradually being
forced to seek alternative platforms.

What we are seeing is a convergence of different hardware platforms and their respective operating
systems. In any case, legacy DOS programs will need some kind of middleware to run on current
hardware. When virtualized, it makes not much difference on which platform you run DOS XyWrite. Mac
or Windows 7 is a matter of preference, and the matter should be considered on the intrinsic
benefits of each platform and system. All are equally able to run DOS legacy apps, but the look and
feel and comfort of it may present slight differences. It is possible to stitch together a system
with almost total backward compatibily within the Virtual PC solution on Windows XP or later using
Virtual PC 2007. Legacy keyboard issues could be solved with Avant Stellar to restore the true
finger feel of legacy DOS computing while maintaining XP compatibility. Alas, the firm that produced
this marvel has gone under. Equipping a Mac with a PC keyboard and running some kind MS stuff is not
very economical, nor elegant, if you do not use the Mac extensively. Why not rather buy a
good-quality certified business XP machine or a cheap used one. Anyway, you do not need a Mac to run
DOS. Macs are for Mac people.
