And I should have responded to James's comment:
"It seems to work under DosBox (without tweaking NBCUSTOM.SET), if
that's any cause for optimism."
That comment prompted me to look at WINRUN = OFF, which solves the problem.
NB has the same weird color settings under DOSBox, but that's another
matter. James, if you work on the color settings, could you let us know
your results?
