Re: III+ and 95

Rob Perschau raises the possibility of converting the *Kansas City Star*
from Xy III+ to Word. I imagine that TTG will have plenty to say; but
since they may not see RB's message till Monday, here goes.

>Can XyIII+ be used successfully with Windows 95?

Yes. Moreover, I wonder: Why on earth not? Especially when I go on to read:

>Our problem . . . is with the necessity to hit another key to allow a
>function key to do its thing (hit F5 and nothing happens until you strike
>some other key). This creates havoc with xpl as well.

I don't understand what the problem is. That some functions require the
successive pressing of keys? This seems hardly unique to XyWrite. Indeed,
it's a windowsy concept (Alt-one key, then another key, to make any use of
a Win3.1 drop-down menu).

I have no knowledge of Netware, let alone experience with it. As for the
switch to Windows (combined with any word processor), if you can't combine
this with new hardware, you'd better think carefully about the equipment
you do propose to use. If your people are used to and happy with Xy 3+ on
even an early model AT with 1MB of RAM, they're likely to be impatient with
Windows on anything slower than a "DX4/100" (i.e. DX3/99) with 16MB of RAM.
(If they make very careful use of Windows, then, once Windows itself has
started, a 486DX/33 with 8MB will be adequate for XyWin. By contrast, the
latest version of Word is said to require 32MB to run at a decent clip.)
