in xydos, you did things like this with a substitution table. in the printer
file you put a reference to the substitution table in the font definition and
then you could pick some character you never used and put an entry in the
substitution table making it into the three character string you're looking for
(character, backspace, and accent). you might try it although I'm not sure how
you would know how far to backspace with a proportional font. guess you'd have
to figure it out separately for each character.
