HP Printer drivers

Here we go again. I've been through the archive and cannot find anything
that seems to address this issue, so...
Got a secondhand Epson Action Laser 1400. Epson's Web site recommends
using the HP LJ4 driver for Win 9x (though I found a 1500 32-bit Windows
driver that seems to work), but of course what I really hope to do is use
it to print from XyDOS. Got the Xy LJ4 driver off the original disks, and
Michael N. kindly sent me LJbin. (I tried the FB code that Robert had
sent Michael, but it caused the printer not to print. Either it's not
compatible with the Epson or it got trashed in transit; I suspect the
latter, since it had some very long lines that perhaps should have had
CR/LFs?) The problem is accented letters and other high-order characters.
They show up fine when I print using the HP-2 driver, come out as zeros,
most of them, when I use the LJ-4 driver--BUT the substitution tables for
the symbol set I was using (7J) are, according to file compare (and a
quick eyeballing) IDENTICAL in the two printer files. So I tried printf,
to different files with different drivers loaded, and sure enough, the
results were different. Where else in a printer file would substitution
be affected or effected?
