Harry, I'm already running Opera. The first-page-of-Google browser speed comparison was run on 800 Mhz and recommended Opera. It loads itself faster than Firefox, but I can't see any significant difference in displaying web pages.
Patricia, I'm running windowed. With XP Pro, I have had serious jerky-cursor problems on Toshiba laptops without TAME. Sony, I think, was a tossup with or without TAME. And there's no jerky cursor (or so much less it's imperceptible) on an HP nc2400 (though its processor is unimpressive for its purported specs) and on the Fujitsu P1120. Hardware clearly makes a difference.
I've picked through Startup and Services to eliminate all but the essentials. Disabled Automatic Updates on Windows (and don't have anything else phoning home either). All the elementary stuff. The security program is Kaspersky, which is supposed to be more protective and less bulky than Norton (and has a much more informative interface).
I was just hoping someone knows a little more about, perhaps, changing memory settings or priorities under the hood of XP. I will take a look on the tech groups.
Incidentally, the Fujitsu won't play YouTube videos correctly either, because the necessary Flash version needs more resources.
I'm sure someone in the tech universe has formulated a truism about how fast software bloats to fill the available processors.
And I remember when a certain word-processing program fit cozilly onto just one floppy....

Have you tried a different browser? Opera is supposed to be faster.

Aha! I've been saying that jerky cursor is not inevitable with
XP. Unless...Do you run full screen or windowed? Jerky cursor
only happens, AFAIK, in windowed mode.
