"Crapware" (pardon their French) is the au courant (pardon my French) term
for any and all unasked for pre-bundled software. E.g., AOL, Norton trial,
Office trial, and many, many less familiar names. If you ask Dell, they'll
sell you the box with *only* the software you expect (viz., that which
forms part of the operating system).
Harry, Re: "crapware:" what do you ask them to not install?

I'm running laptop-only, and for my next laptop I'm going for something
smaller and lighter than what I have now. I've narrowed it down to either
the Dell XPS 1330 or the Sony Vaio SZ series. The problem in choosing is
that I like the Sony better, but I can't get one with the faster, "Santa
Rosa" chipset unless I get Vista. Dell will sell me one with XP (and with
"crapware" removed), so I'm leaning towards it.
