≪what's the special part?≫
These programs are databases, but with a lot of intelligence built in.
Many offer web search facilities and built-in links to known Internet
&/or university archives of periodicals. For example, you might want
information on recent articles on the mating habits of South American
bats; you type in the subject, and hey presto, you get a list of
articles, authors, journals (both printed and electronic), abstracts,
and in some cases (depending on copyright arrangements) a link to
complete downloadable pdf files. All of this information can be stored
in your local database and referenced in a text program with a
right-mouse click or keyboard shortcut, either in your body text or your
footnote/endnote. University-level research makes much use of these
resources and programs; medicine is particularly well represented among
the world's online searchable archives.
Thanks to all who have provided links and comments.
