Many thanks to Daniel Say for pointing out the WCD directory change
utility. It's a valuable addition to the tool box.
I'm testing the 32-bit DOS executable, which is basically quite
similar to VCD. I was pleased that it works with Xy running under
Win NT (VCD doesn't), as well as under OS/2. WCD has a number of
interesting options, including a push-pop directory stack, support
for long directory names in Win9x (but not yet in NT), the ability
to exclude paths from the search (useful on networks) and to search
on regular expressions. In one respect, its syntax is less flexible
that VCD's: if no directory name contains the "hint", VCD will
return near matches (by truncating the hint); WCD reports nothing
found.
WCD is actively developed: v2.2.7 is dated 30 September 99. VCD,
unfortunately, never moved beyond v1.0 (and, for example, lacks
support for long dir names); however, for 8.3 searches it's reliable
and fast. And VCD works from the OS/2 command line.
