In point of fact, they're not in one directory. But they are on
one drive, physical or logical. If Windows has to be reinstalled,
everything on drive C: is wiped, including your data if it's
there. If you have your data on a separate logical partition on
the same physical hard drive, it will survive a reinstall of
Windows, but not a physical crash of the disk drive. Data on a
separate physical hard drive will survive both.
