Paul,
Thanks. Firefox is the main one I need fixed--because its undistinguished
brown blob looks too much like some of the other brown icons (notably
Eudora), but I'd like a more general solution. Hmmm, the TameXy icon shows
up correctly in all places--so maybe it is just a Firefox issue.

I don't know if this is what you are thinking of Harry, but see
http://iconpacks.mozdev.org/docs/windows-integration.html. It seems to
fit the bill.
Harry, if the above turns out to be chore, there may be a simpler way to
accomplish what you want to do. I reread yr orig. posting and the icons
you spoke of
" the little tab in the taskbar, and for the icon that shows up in the
window title bar? The new icon for Firefox shows up okay on the shortcut
itself,"
can all, I believe, be fixed by downloading and installing an xpi file
from http://iconpacks.mozdev.org/index.html, assuming that the icon you
use is on this page. It's a much quicker and simpler fix, but won't be as
thoroughgoing as the windows-integration solution above and is a
Firefox-only solution.
