Two things come to mind first:

Xywrite III Plus for Dos was my first version and I'm still using it. I've always found it extremely stable. As I said, this is the first time I've experienced anything like this, either with Xywrite or with this computer, which otherwise is functioning perfectly.
A run-away key-repeat for carriage returns describes it perfectly -- but that doesn't explain why the directory shows such an enormous file. When I open the file whether in Xywrite or in Windows, only a couple of paragraphs of text are there, followed by lots of blank space. Even if this is the result of hundreds of carriage repeats, the text should be at the end of the blank space; but it isn't.
I automatically back up all my files with Acronis every night, so I should be able to retrieve the missing text. But I'd like to understand what happened -- and of course, prevent it from happening again.
