Thanks, guys. I'm reassured by everything you've said, and by knowing I can rely on you for guidance along the way.
I'm a very quick study, but I have neither your in-depth understanding of software nor your long experience tweaking it. Let me put it this way: I've only created a PATH once, and that thanks to Carl's step-by-step instructions. So you can imagine how thrilled I am to hear Kari talk about a secret one-click installer for vDosXy!

Dear Lynn,
Yes, it is about time to switch. I would definitely suggest that you install Win 7 64-bit. There is no good reason to do otherwise. Even modern browsers need 64-bit power. And if you will virtualize something, you will definitely need more memory than the 32-bit option provides. If you want to go that route, install VirtualBox and W2K. This much better that XP mode in all respects: nimbler, more responsive, and with better backward compatibility (even some Win 3.1 programs work, like Quark and Ventura, albeit with some limitations).
Installing vDosXy is easy, there is even a secret installer (that has been in beta stage from May this year, when I and Carl last worked on it). It makes the process automatic. You just provide a full Xy installation in a folder, say C:\XY, and the installer sets up vDosXy 1.00 for you. Just click a desktop icon, and XyWrite starts. And there is plenty of community support to back this up.

I'm on the cusp of reluctantly leaving XP a year and a half after MS abandoned it. I've felt relatively safe despite the lack of support, since I have good security software and no bad browsing or downloading habits, and took the precaution of removing notorious virus-magnets (Adobe Flash and Java).
I'm still conflicted about the move, since I have Xy III+ doing what I want in XP, and no complaints about its Windows functions. But I know I can't stay with XP indefinitely, and next week I'll have some free time in which to wrestle Windows 7 into running Xywrite (and into looking as much like XP as possible).
I'm going to stick with 32-bit for now. I don't do anything on this computer that needs more memory.
