This is all very interesting, if a bit abstract to someone like me
who's had nada to do with *nix. It seems pretty clear, though, from
your descriptions, that the oddities you've been experiencing are a
product of the larger environment, or the environment interacting
with XyWrite, not of XyWrite per se. But you certainly seem to be on
your way to taming the beast. Do continue to keep us posted.

The old x86 CPU designations seem strange to me now. 686? Is that
what we're up to? I stopped keeping track a long time ago.
