Lost expanded memory

I take it this is just an NT/2K/XP problem? Because 98SE manages to
juggle expanded memory and USB. Of course, when you type MEM /C, the
expanded isn't listed in the first listing. Did you scroll down? Here,
for example, are my reports, first from a plain-vanilla DOS prompt, then
from shell to DOS within Xy:

Both pifs have all memory properties set to AUTO. And there's obviously
some sort of shell game going on with expanded and extended.
