In XywIII+ the default for a "discretionary hyphen (DH)" is the tilde.
When entered, it displays only in expanded mode. You can replace tilde
as the DH by picking an unused character and putting "DH=that character"
in the printer file (without the "s). The tilde comes back alive as an
ordinary character. I use the little house symbol which is ASCII 127.
You may want to investigate whether your problem in NB is a similar
feature.
