I can certainly appreciate your wanting to have instant response from
your software. I get pretty tired of waiting for Windows-based stuff
to get around to respond to my commands. It reminds me a lot of
Wordstar's performance speed on my floppy-based cp/m machine.
I have to give PageMaker some high marks. It's so versatile, it's
worth the Windows-wait. I tried to import some graphic files (HPGL
format -- plot files) into Winword last night, but resizing and putting
text around these things just wasn't working out. So I fired up
PageMaker and had the job done in no time! Other than projects like
that, I can get along pretty fine with text-mode wp'ing. I got pretty
used to Word for DOS' smooth and predictable formatting capabilities
and found myself not using the graphics-oriented print preview very
much. Like you, I was comfortable seeing the text-mode spacing on my
screen, and I knew from experience what to expect to see come out of
the printer.
I got to thinking about new toys during my project work, though; and
I've almost convinced myself that I need one of those HP PaintJet
printers. I saw some stuff printed to transparency material, and I
like the subtle effect the PaintJet produced. It presented textures as
smooth as the HP plotter generates textures that are stark. A nice
effect.
