Patricia,
I don't use XP enough to really know about this, but
I've gotten the impression that W2K may have more
limitations regarding icons than XP does, and perhaps
this has some distant relevance to what you've run
into. In W2K, if I've created an app-category folder
(or other user-created folder) on the desktop, it
often seems resistant to appearing as anything other
than a plain manilla (Vanilla ?) folder. There is a
"trick" that sometimes circumvents this -- namely
using a Shortcut folder to represent the "actual"
folder. However, back when I did bother to
investigate this, I recall finding various shareware
programs that supposedly let you perform all sorts of
customizations and graphic transformations to
non-shortcut folders that otherwise wanted to remain
plain.
My point is this (and you have to discount it
somewhat, because I am not primarily a Windows user):
Windows often doesn't want to let you do something or
other, but some ingenious programmers will often find
ways to make it possible, so long as you are willing
to fork over some coin. These folks make their
living, such as it is, by following the Woolly Mammoth
around, while trying not to get stepped on. And you'd
be amazed at how much of it is out there. I've
counted as many as 70 competing shareware programs in
a given category. Where it is shareware, at least you
usually get to try it first before you buy.
