Changing hard-return symbol

I'm having a problem in XyWin with the hard-return symbol, ordinarily a
backward-facing arrow (ASCII 27, I guess).
Wanting to get mode changes (MD+xx) to display as deltas in draft view, and
forgetting whatever the wise heads on this List had advised, I went to the menu
bar at the top of the screen, elected "Advanced" and "Preferences" and
"Defaults". I checked the appropriate box, marked this change NOT to be
permanent (or so I thought), and closed.
Ever since, although I haven't seen the desired deltas, my hard returns are
appearing onscreen as an underline character _ instead of a back-facing arrow.
Rebooting doesn't restore the back-arrow; I can't see how to undo the damage by
going back through the Advanced/Preferences/Defaults route, and when I try I get
various error messages about "default B".
And although my XWSET.DFL has been changed as of today's date, indicating
perhaps that this change was effected there, I can't find this parameter
anywhere in XWSET.DFL by unaided searching.
I can find no guidance in the XyWin manual. (It may or may not be a good manual
-- I'm not an expert enough XyWriter to judge -- but as a professional I *do*
say it's not much of an index!)
Is it safe now to say I need H*lp??
