Welcome, John K. Riordan.

Here are some options for searching the archives of the XyWrite
list:

1) Freelists.org searchable/browsable archive (June 2009-present):
http://www.freelists.org/archive/xywrite

2) Or, if you prefer Google:
[search terms] site:freelists.org/archive/xywrite
For example, the following Google search pulls up an earlier thread
relating to John's question:
win7 winxp mode site:freelists.org/archive/xywrite

3) XySearch (currently covers 1991-2010):
http://www.holmgren.org/Xy/Search

There is also this thread, started by Jon Pareles late last year:
http://www.freelists.org/post/xywrite/Win-7-64-Bit

As Jordan points out, we've had many conversations on the subject.
This has been a hot topic for some years.
