Which reminds me of another thing. I had thought my XPL stripped out the
additive modes, but I see it does not even acknowledge them, and that's
because I wrote another XPL routine devoted entirely to removing them.
Those interested in why may read on if they wish.

Once upon a time, when the world was younger, people were comparing the
improvements WordPerfect had made in version 5.1 to the old 4.2, you
opened an MSWord file with escape/transfer/load, and Wordstar was an
option, it came to pass that the production manager and I customized his
version of the XyWrite 3+ to QuarkXpress NAPS filter. And lo, we saw the
results, and they were good. And so, in the fullness of time, with the
arrival of XyWrite 4, with its additive modes, we ran files through the
NAPS filter and they were _not_ good, because the filter didn't
recognize them. And so it came to pass that we asked the XyWrite 4
freelancers to NOT use additive modes. (I customized 4 for the in-house
people so that they never even knew the difference, and actually came to
adore global search and replace--with one exception, of course; there is
always one, is there not?)
