My impression was that you needed to really pound away at these (and the Avants) for *many* years, spill crumbs and coffee on them, or etc., in order to break one. I did have one original Omnikey that developed a couple of sticking or non-responsive keys, -- after 10+ years of hard use -- that I think wound up being stuck in a closet, though I suspect it was still repairable. (I'm in a much less dusty environment nowadays, which has to be a good thing . . . both for me and for the keyboard.)
