Others have already pointed out ways this can be done. I would just add
that CTRL+B, CTRL+I, CTRL+U etc. (all in the Reference Guide) not only are
toggles by default but use the additive form (... rather than
Xy3's ...). In my experience, that by itself would have been
reason enough to switch from Xy3 to Xy4: I now routinely use typographic
features -- like italic superscripts, or converting to boldface a long
passage which already contains underlined words -- that were unavailable in
Xy3.
