Quoting Kari Eveli :
A freeware recovery program:

This program has its limitations, but it is free.

Think ahead! Use an automated backup solution (you need an
inexpensive software package (e.g. Acronis) and a second hard disk
or other media, or now you can even back up to an Internet location).
These and others are good suggestions, and I wish Leslie (the OP) the
best of luck in recovering his work. But what nags me about this
thread is the statement that he "accidently deleted material I was
working on, and also deleted the material on the back-up file." How
did that happen, and how can it be prevented? One possibility that
occurs to me is to change the name or location, or both, of the
backup, so that inadvertent deletion becomes well-nigh impossible.
We'd need more information about his backup regime and how the mishap
occurred, but at some point (presumably after the deadline has been
dealt with) it would be worth some thought on Leslie's part. Once is
once too many for a disastrous slip of this kind.
