Oh, yeah? Ever hear of BetaMax vs. VHS? There are such things as
devious and unfair means of competition. That's why we need
someone (not necessarily the gov't) to, in the fine medieval
phrase, "hold the lists" and ensure a level playing field.
Problem is, they too will be human and subject to bribery and
subornation.
