Re: New Windows installer for vDos-lfn

Hi Kari, John, and Carl,

I am glad to let you all know that I have found the cause of the window size issue. As we know vDos-lfn is based on the latest version of vDos, while vDosXy was based on an old version of vDos. Unlike that old version of vDos, in the latest vDos version the font size selection of external TTF files are in even point sizes and rounded pixel dimensions, which was mentioned as a major change in vDos 2015.11.01 (see the last change in the page https://www.vdos.info/download.html). As a result, the font size was rounded down, so the window height becomes shorter. Since vDosXy was not based on the latest vDos, it did not have this behavior. However, I have realized that many of you may in fact prefer the older behavior, so I decided to add an option to vDos-lfn's config.txt so that both behaviors can be achieved in vDos-lfn simply by changing the setting in config.txt. By default, vDos-lfn uses the same behavior as in the latest vDos, but you can now set "EVENSIZE=OFF" in config.txt if you want the old behavior instead as in vDosXy. As usual I have updated the vDos-lfn binary and installer. Please download the new version.

Hello Wengier,

Thank you for your reply.

About the installer, I retried it (downloaded from:
http://ow.ly/lFfN3006Vmk), but still no change when there is no previous
folder (I renamed the installed folder to make room for a new installation).

The window size issue is real with 43x80. I have frame off in both
installations, and when I superpose the windows, the situation is
evident. Both windows match horizontally, and there are the same number
of lines, I am using the same font and running the same NB3 (a Xy3-type
variant) installation in both, but the vDosLFN window is not as tall as
the vDosXy window. They are aligned at the bottom. The fonts are
compressed vertically in the vDosLFN window, and their shapes are not
normal.

However, when I change the window to 40x80, the font display is ok in
vDosLFN, and the window size is approx. the same as in vDosXy 43x80. On
the other hand, vDosXy makes the window wider than with the 43x80
setting in this case, but maintains font shapes.

Now then, it seems that this boils down to how vDosLFN interacts with
NB3 or XY line setting SL=43, which is the same in all of the above.

As regards memory, the 4DOS shell explains the difference.
