Re: do Win95 programs?

Jeff (peregrine@xxxxxxxx) doesn't think you can run Win progs from the Xy
command line. As I said in my previous post, it's possible and sometimes
desirable. It doesn't matter whether Xy is full-window or not, as long as
it's running in a "DOS box" and not dedicated, non-windows DOS.

Try it, Jeff: from the command line in XyDOS, type "do calc" (without the
quotes). You'll get the Win calculator overlaid on the DOS-boxed Xy, or Xy in
full screen will be minimized and the calculator will show up over your
Windows display.

Do a calculation; press CTRL+C to paste the answer to the clipboard. Flip
back to Xy. If you're in a DOS box, you can paste the answer using the
Windows clipboard:
* Click the paste icon if you have the toolbar visible, or
* Click the upper left of the title bar and then choose Edit and Paste (there
are keyboard shortcuts for this too: ALT+spacebar, E, P).

If you're in full-screen Xy, you have to press ALT+Enter first to get into a
Windows-graphic emulation of the DOS screen. The the pasting should work.

With some video cards, the ALT+Enter doesn't work well or at all, but all of
my computers give no problem.

Note: if Calculator is still running, you don't need to type "do calc" again
-- in fact, that'll bring up another instance of it. Just press ALT+Tab and
then keep pressing Tab while holding ALT until the Calculator icon is
highlighted.

Try other stuff: do Explorer, do winfile (the old Win file manager, which
some prefer to Explorer). Anything in the path statement, or anything you're
willing to type in the full path to (with quotation marks if they're not in
the old 8+3 style).

XyDOS *can* your gateway to lots of Win95 stuff, for good or ill.
