Re: Xywin vs. Nota Bene -Reply

I can tell you that the latest version (Version 5.5) of Nota Bene is
much improved over the original release. They now have tables
implemented in the menu system, and as a whole the program seems much
more stable than it was in it's original release.

The other two plusses are: import/export from other word processing
packages is superior to XyWrite - particularly for those of us stuck
using Microsoft Word at work. Secondly, Nota Bene seems to have a
future - XyDos and XyWin are, essentially dead.

Perhaps someone on the list who is familiar with both XyWin and Nota
Bene
can advise me on which to purchase.

I am a long time user of XyDos. (And I own Ibid, Orbis, and Ibid plus
for
XyDos, though I don't use them much these days.) However, a laptop
that I
recently purchased (a Toshiba) will not let me run XyDos. ( I assume
that
there's something in the video card that will not allow Dos character
mode
to function properly.) I have downloaded the Nota Bene demo, and with
a bit
of tweaking it is now functioning properly. (At least there is no
screen
flicker).

I have also cobbled together a 'demo' version of XyWin installing the
XW.exe
files and dlls that are available from TTG. I have simply installed
the
Xydos mnu and dlg files--along with the xydos bitfonts--for a working
hybrid
of the two programs.

I must say that in many ways I find my bastard version of Xywin
superior to
Nota Bene. All of my xpl programs run without a hitch; my Xydos
keyboard
works prettly well (I've had to remap a couple functions). And it is
very,
very fast.

Nota Bene, by contrast, has a very hard time with my Xydos keyboard,
hangs
on several xpl programs, and requires modifications of many Xydos
files to
show properly on the screen. It has, however, one great advantage.
Its on
screen fonts are much, much clearer than those I am getting with my
cobbled
together version of Xywin.

So a question: How good are the screen fonts that actually come with
the
XyWin package? Are those that Nota Bene uses clearly superior? What
other
advantages will Nota Bene provide?

Thanks. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (The price
difference--$129
vs. $199--is not really an issue for me.)
