Patricia,
Of the two dos emulators available in Linux, Dosbox and Dosemu, I have been successful in making
Xywrite work very well in Dosbox. Jeff previously posted his dosbox.conf settings on the listserv.
They were very helpful. I don't have the date but a search of the archives for dosbox should find
them quickly.
The one thing I can add is that it is very easy to add lines to the dosbox.conf[iguration] file so
that Xywrite can recognize both your hard drive (C:) as well as a removable floppy/flash/keydrive
(A:). This way you can save your files in Xywrite to C: + A:, like normal. My Linux computer is off
right now, so I can't tell you my exact commands at the moment, but if anyone is interested I can
post them tomorrow.
Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to figure out how to add the patches to Dosbox that will
allow both printing and cut-and-paste. It is also possible that neither is doable.
As for Dosemu, the configuration is very complicated, and I can find very little documentation on
the web to help newbies figure out what to do. Only tonight was I able to finally learn how to get
the program to recognize my Xywrite directory and load Xywrite correctly. This was done manually,
using the lredir command once dosemu was running to tell it to recognize my xywrite directory. I
still need to determine how to make this happen automatically.
I still have a lot of work to do before I can use Dosemu. For example, I need to figure out how to
make my keyboard.kbd file work correctly. Thus, I am also open to any suggestions or help from
anyone who has managed configuring Dosemu successfully. I also wonder if cut-and-paste to and from
Dosemu to Linux is possible.
By the way, the Linux package I am using is Debian, using KDE as my graphical interface.
Bob
