The footnote spacing problem that John Cumming asks about is not
restricted to XyWrite. It generally happens with double-spaced
text, which most word-processor developers don't give much
thought. I read lots of student papers, **all** of which are
prepared with Word. It is extremely common for footnotes keyed to
sentences near the top of a page to appear on the next page. When
I have seen this problem in my own XYDOS files, it disappears
when the text is single-spaced (that's not much consolation). I
don't remember that it occurs in XyWin files, but maybe I just
didn't notice. And it doesn't happen all the time in XYDOS. I
wonder, by the way, whether it turns up in Nota Bene, which is
advertised as an academic writer's word processor?
Cheers,
