Over here in Macville, the passwords are there in the profile
in "signons.txt", mildly encoded.

It's more automated--not always a good thing, but no problem here--

backup and restore various things--passwords, cookies, history--or
uncheck them.
Bookmarks are in Profile, but I don't see passwords or the others,
and I frankly hope they are buried somewhere deep under a gibberish
filename. Each to his own, but I think it's useful.

How is that an improvement on simply keeping copies of the Profile
folder?

Why settle for just bookmarks?
You can back up all the Firefox settings with MozBackup:
http://www.mozbackup.org/
It makes a little *.pcv file that you can copy onto (in my case) a
thumb drive and restore or move to new machine. Recently it proved
quite handy when I mistakenly deleted all my saved passwords with
one click.
