I have been using the Random House Webster's, which includes a thesaurus, with
noticeable success. Both dictionary and thesaurus are more comprehensive than
the XY versions. It loaded in a couple of seconds on a 386/25,
and instantly on a 486/66 (both with disk cache). In order to avoid
conflicts with a highly customized keyboard, I assigned the dictionary to ^*@L
and the thesaurus to the default ^*@T. There is a larger online dictionary--in
fact you can get the OED with miserable search facilities on CD-ROM--but this
is a highly satisfactory solution even for someone with a very large
vocabulary, and is inexpensive.
