I just gathered from the responses that Robert is leaving the group. I've been mostly lurking of late, often deleting stuff that I didn't have time to read, knowledge to offer, or a need to apply.
In my days at Xyquest, Robert was already well known, long before the term "flame" had become au courant. He could seem demanding and intemperate at times, but he surely kept our feet to the fire to provide honest, thoughtful tech support. I knew some of the tech support people, and I think it was the support operation that fostered such a devoted (fanatical? rabid?) following.
My hobby, as an early XyWrite user, was to try to make it do things that Dave Erickson hadn't intended it to do. I had a lot of fun and ended up as an employee. But Robert took things far beyond any hobby and (with Carl) raised the extension of XyWrite to an art.
Robert, I wish you well.
