Startup problem - Lock-up at BX230611.SPD

I have recently after making some system changes encountered a startup
problem where XyWrite locks up while loading Speedo font BX230611.SPD.
Google shows that this or a similar problem was raised on the discussion
group in October of 2002, but I can't access the archives prior to 2009
formerly hosted by Robert Holmgren or on datarealm. Were these moved?
Does anyone recall the solution to the problem?
