Re: downloading XyWrite

Stick with what you got. XyWrite for Windows (nothing at all like
WordPerfect, much like 3+), is a clunky, buggy product rushed out to
take advantage of the Windows 3.1 "wave," and never debugged, developed,
or distributed to any great extent. In addition, if you have done any
XPL at all, you may find, to your dismay, that some of your routines
work slowly, cannot be used with the keys to which you have assigned
them in 3+, or, worse, not at all.

On the other hand, although you do not state how much power your PC has
and/or what version of Windows you're running, you may be quite sure
that your machine, whatever it is, will have enough power to run the
program with all deliberate speed. (I.e., there's nothing wrong with
your computer; this program is clunky.)

By the way: I was unaware that the program is available for downloading.
If so, the site you refer to may also provide you with an upgrade of the
DOS version, the last of which was 4.1. It had some major improvements
over 3+, the best among them the ability to search and replace wild
cards--something that insofar as I know even the latest version of Word
is not able to do. (Certainly Word XP cannot.)

If you do want to try it, my suggestion would be to not "install" it in
the Windows sense (and I'm assuming that your system is at least Windows
95, if not higher), but to simply open a DOS Window, create a XyWrite,
umm, folder, and COPY the files that you have downloaded.

If you want a REAL Windows product, purchase (yes, you'll have to
purchase it) Nota Bene. That's a program for academics that uses XyWrite
as its word processing "engine."

As for viruses: the odds that anyone Out There would be interested in
writing a virus that affects XyWrite, in any of its versions, are slim
and none. And Slim left town.

I would like to install XyWrite for Windows on my pc. Can somebody suggest a simple, safe way to do so? I received a warning before downloading from xywweb so I am a bit skittish, given the other messages regarding a virus. How much does XyWrite for Windows resemble WordPerfect or XyWrite III+? I never used it beyond the basics in that version back in the early '90s. I am not proficient in computer coding language. It may be I'd be better off with III+ as I still have a manual. I never could get the snaking command to work, though. Thanks for your advice.
