I believe they use the information that was used to originally activate
your Windows 7 or 8 license at first use. In short, I had to divulge
nothing new except respond to the invitation to upgrade. It works as an
update to a registered Windows 7 or 8 setup, which means it also can be
easily reversed. If you wish to have a "clean install" of Windows 10,
you must first go through the upgrade process, which keeps your
applications, data, etc. and issues a new license linked to the machine,
then download a copy of 10 to a bootable USB drive or DVD, and start afresh.
