What I don't understand, however, is why (in NT, anyway) you can
"shell" to DOS from Xy and command START to spawn a new DOS session,
but can't directly issue DOS START COMMAND.COM from the CMline with
the same result. (You get "Bad command or filename" instead!) Why,
also, the VER command issued from a shelled-to DOS prompt returns
"NT version 4" whereas DOS VER from the Xy CMline returns "DOS
version 5.00.500". In this respect, NT is opaque, inscrutable --
and maddening.
I'm no conspiracy buff, but I have to think Rafe is on to something
when he suggests that M$ is deliberately undermining DOS as a
prelude to "disappearing" it altogether. It makes perfect sense if,
as reported, NT is in line to succeed Win9x as the pre-loaded mass-
market OS. If not deliberate, then certainly a case of malign
neglect.
Not to put too fine a point on it, I loathe Microsoft!
