Burghers and such

Imagine George W. Bush paying a state visit to Edinburgh and, in his
Texan drawl, proclaiming, 'I am a scotch!' The Edinburghers would be
enthusiastic, mostly over such a display of solidarity, but at least
partly out of amusement over an unintended double meaning. So it was
when JFK made his historic speech in Berlin. As Wolfgang rightly says,
it was not a horrible gaff. It was just a moderately amusing slip. Dan
Quayle did worse.

Let's see whether the presidential speech writers have learned their
lesson when a president next visits Hamburg or Frankfurt.
