This is probably way off base, but have you checked settings.dfl for
blank lines (i.e., CR/LF followed by either another CR/LF or space
CR/LF)? I once was having all sorts of flaky behaviour and OOM problems,
pulled up settings.dfl, happened to see one case of a blank line,
Searched and got rid of some 40, and the problems went away.
